What Is Preventative Dental Care?

Preventative dental care is also known as prophylactics and covers dental treatment designed to prevent diseases and harm to your mouth and teeth. With preventative dental care, you can avoid invasive (and generally unwanted) procedures likes root canals.

Under our preventative dental care services, we first inspect your teeth and gums to uncover any signs of disease or decay. Then we use a gamut of products that help reinforce your enamel, cleanse your gums and teeth, and protect your teeth from decay.

Preventative dental care can also cover more than the standard cleaning you’re used to like investigating tooth sensitivity, white spots on teeth, and bleeding gums.

Standard Cleaning and Checkup

With a standard cleaning appointment, we clean the surface of your teeth, in between your teeth, and the gums with the highest quality dental instruments available. The standard cleaning also includes a checkup to inspect signs of damage, decay, or their potential.

Listerine is used in our office as a mouth rinse during cleaning appointments instead of water because of its ability to affect bacterial plaque. Listerine also has antiviral properties and is a much better solution for hygienic rinsing than water.

All dental products in our office are available for demonstration. If you are interested in exploring our selection, let us know while booking your appointment.

Care and Prevention for Specific Needs

Sensitive Teeth

Having sensitive teeth is quite the burden, transforming normal daily activities like brushing your teeth or even drinking water into painful experiences. Sharp pains usually accompany these activities and leaving it untreated for too long can worsen the damage and pain. We offer two preventative care measures for those suffering from sensitive teeth.

Fluoride

A fluoride treatment in our office helps strengthen the enamel of your teeth and is a preventative dental care solution applied if the cause of your sensitivity is enamel related. We may even prescribe fluoride treatment for at-home preventative dental care if necessary.

Desensitizing Toothpastes

Desensitizing toothpastes may be prescribed to help block the pain associated with sensitive teeth. Though they may be purchased over the counter, we don’t recommend using them as your solution until you’ve come in for an appointment. Our preventative dental care service for sensitive teeth uncovers the cause of the pain and helps you avoid any further damage or discomfort.

White Spots

White spots on your teeth are often a sign of demineralization. This essentially means a cavity is forming but is not yet formed. We can reverse this formation through quick and proper preventative dental care issuance.

Fluoride

We use fluoride most often to re-mineralize the tooth which reverses its decay and prevents a cavity from forming. With regular preventative dental care checkups, the need for this treatment is diminished as white spots are less likely to form. We may also prescribe an at-home fluoride rinse if necessary.

ICON

One of the newest and most technologically advanced methods of ridding your teeth of white spots is a treatment called ICON. It’s a micro-invasive procedure that prevents the need for drilling and filling cavities.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums can be caused by a variety of factors including gingivitis, periodontitis, and simply brushing too hard. Our preventative dental care service investigates the cause of your bleeding gums and provides proper treatment in-office and at-home.

Addressing Patient Requests

If you think you are suffering from a dental/oral condition or are experiencing symptoms of a specific condition, our preventative dental care products can be reviewed for use. Upon request, our office can use:

  1. Water flosses
  2. Tooth showers
  3. Stain removers/stain formation preventers
  4. Gum stimulators
  5. Proxabrush

Office Diagnostic Tools for Preventative Care

We offer and use a variety of state-of-the-art preventative dental care diagnostic tools to detect tooth health, cavities, decay, and gum-related issues. We aim to use the latest dental technology that provides a safer, less invasive look into the health of your mouth.

Digital X-rays

X-rays allow us to see inside of your teeth, between then, and their roots. This process is not typical of every dental examination and only taken when necessary and under your consent.

Digital x-rays provide a more comfortable and environmentally friendly look at your teeth by using sensors that instantly transmit an image upon detection, up to 90% less x-ray radiation than traditional film x-rays, and no harmful chemicals for development.

Digital Dental Photography

Taking photos of your teeth and gums through traditional cameras or cameras built specifically for dental use help our preventative dental care measures by allowing us further inspection without the expense of your comfort or time.

Digital Intraoral Camera

We may need a closer look into one specific area of your mouth that what can be seen with the naked eye or an x-ray. Intraoral cameras help us by taking high quality color pictures of the area in question via a small, lightweight tool. It’s a completely safe, radiation-free tool that helps us perform our preventative dental care work at your comfort.

CariVu

CariVu is a handheld digital cavity and decay detector that uses non-ionizing radiation that’s safer and more comfortable for you. This device helps us see through a tooth an detect and possible lesions or cracks that may result in a cavity.

T-Scan

Some dental issues stem from biting too hard, chewing to vigorously, and grinding teeth together. As a preventative dental care measure, we use the T-Scan device to determine the force with which you exert when biting down and the relationship between your upper and lower sets of teeth.

PerioPredict

Detecting gum disease is always part of our preventative dental care process. Some gum diseases are genetic, though. To find out, we use PerioPredict in the office and for you to take home as our solution. It is a saliva-based genetic test that determines whether you are genetically predisposed to gum disease.

Due to COVID-19, we have updated our safety procedures for attending your preventative dental care appointment. Our offices are sanitized with UV light between each patient and only one patient may enter the office at a time. We also disinfect our water with ozone. This way, we provide a safe, clean experience for all of our patients.
